The tables were set. The chairs were aligned. The champagne was poured. It was a clear sunny 89-degree evening in June. A perfect day for a fake wedding in Detroit. Yes, you heard me say a fake wedding. In fact, it was a big full-scale fake wedding, with all of the adorable charms of a real wedding and reception.
The goal of The Big Fake Wedding®, according to the event promoter, was to feature local businesses, inspire attendees, and encourage solidly committed marriages. Carli and Joshua, a married Metro Detroit couple of 5-years, was the selected bride and groom for this year’s event.
The Big Event
The crowd began to line up to enter The
Eastern located in the Eastern Market District shortly before 6:30 p.m. for the
wedding vow renewal ceremony.
As each guest enter the venue, they were greeted by two hostesses who
greeted guests with a glass of champagne while being serenaded by a four-piece
string quartet. As guests visited the vendors, servers strolled through the
venue and distributed plated hors d’oeuvres.
Vow Renewal of Carli and Joshua
As 7:00 p.m. approached, guests were
invited out on the patio to witness the vow renewal ceremony. Unlike their original wedding, this time
Carli and Joshua had the honor to renew their vows under the proud watchful eye
of Joshua’s father who served as the officiant.
Even though the event was branded as a fake wedding, the love and
commitment shared between the couple, was real and obvious to everyone. Despite the fact that the couple was
surrounded by complete strangers, the sweet heartfelt words exchanged by the
couple united us all.
The Reception and Vendor Mingle
In all, the ceremony itself only lasted approximately 10
minutes. As with any normal wedding,
immediately following the ceremony was the wedding reception. This reception, however, featured various
vendors with lite-bites food stations sprinkled around the perimeter of the
room. There were even food stations that
spilled over into the outdoor courts permitting guests to take advantage of the
warm summer evening.
By all accounts, the reception wasn’t much different from a
normal wedding reception. There was the
DJ, the guests, the caterers, and the bride and groom; but what made it
different was that no one knew each other.
Ironically, that fact didn’t make a bit of difference.
Couples who were planning their wedding who
came to the event who wanted the feel of a real reception were granted a treat
during the evening. The event permitted the brides and grooms to touch, feel, taste,
see and hear the vendors in their natural element. The event gave guests the
opportunity to place themselves in an actual wedding reception environment
while having a first-hand opportunity to see the styles and services of each vendor.
The event also provided ample inspiration and decoration ideas
for on-lookers. Moreover, each guest table in the venue had a different feel
and look and style. The vendors who participated in the event ranged from
caterers, event planners, photographers, to a wedding dress manufacturer and
beyond. There was even a mobile salon truck on the premises who handled the
makeup and hair for the bride and bridesmaids.
