Add a Little Motor City Love to Your Wedding
If you’re getting married soon and you love Detroit, you may want to consider having a Detroit themed wedding.
Having a Metro Detroit theme for your wedding helps make your wedding memorable, fun, and whimsical.
Here are several ways to make Detroit a showcase of your wedding.
Soda Fountain
Consider having a Vernors Ginger Soda fountain or provide mini-bottles of the soda pop to guests. Add a gift tag to the bottles and soda and voilà…it’s officially a gift favor. Although Vernors is no longer bottled in Detroit, it got its start here. Moreover, for couples who prefer an alcohol-free wedding reception, serving Vernors is a great alternative to serving alcoholic beverages during the Champaign toast.
Favors
Another way of including Detroit themed products in your wedding reception is to have gift bags or gift baskets in the center of each reception table full of Detroit made goodies. Consider having a basket full of different flavors of Better Made chips and popcorn or even have an assortment of Metro Detroit treats on display ranging from Kars Nuts to Velvet peanut butter.
Table Nameplates
If snack items are not quite your thing, instead of the traditional numbered tables, think about creating table nameplates that recognize Detroit landmarks or popular streets. Just think, instead of directing guests to table number seven, you could have them go to the Spirit of Detroit table. Other tables could be titled, the Motown table, the Woodward table, Joe Louis table, and so on. The options are endless. You might also want to include landmarks and treasures that are long-gone, like the old Olympia Stadium or the Boblo Boat.
Center Pieces
Do you love Detroit made cars? If so, make the Motor City a part of your special day. Instead of a traditional centerpiece, replace it with an embellished engine display. There is a great example of a non-traditional display on the website autowereld.com .

There are so many fun ways to incorporate Detroit theme ideas.
Music and Games
We are in Detroit, so of course, we can’t forget the music. The Motown sound can fill the room while entertaining the guests young and old. If we further build on the table identifier idea, we can incorporate Detroit music talents on the table tents and have a list of the artist love songs included as part of the table décor. You can even have fun facts or games created to help keep guests entertained while they are at the reception.
Here are just a few ideas to get you started.

You Can’t Hurry Love

Ribbon in the Sky
Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, The Contours, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and of course The Jackson 5 are other Motown artists that come to mind. The list goes on and on. This is a fun way of bringing the Motown sound into your event.
Perhaps the Motown sound is not your cup of tea. There are many other Metro Detroit area talent that might peak your interest such as Madonna, Kenny Rogers, Eminem, and others.
Appetizers
Now it’s time to get down to some serious foodie business. Detroit flavors can, yet again, play a part in making your reception a big hit. Here is an idea, instead of serving traditional formal appetizers during the cocktail hour, have a little fun and instead serve popular Detroit made mini-Coney dogs.
Detroit Produced Pop Float
Really liven things up a bit by serving mini -floats made from vanilla ice and one of many Faygo pop flavors. If you prefer, skip the ice cream and instead have a beverage bar featuring 50 plus Detroit made Faygo pop flavors?
Just have a little fun exploring your options. You will be surprised by the ideas that will be generated once you get started.
Place Mats & Backdrops
Take a step back into yesteryear and look at Detroit relics that add interest to this special occasion. Consider getting copies of old photographs and turning them into unique placemats. You might even think about transferring photographs of old downtown Detroit and turning it into a backdrop. This could be a good feature for photo booths or designated photo areas. The backdrop gives your guests the chance to create a keepsake with added nostalgia.
Detroit School Spirit
If you really want to get people charged up and excited, consider having tables named after popular Detroit schools, especially those that may have closed over the years. This is a fun way to get people talking and reminiscing about years past.
